The TE27 Corolla Levin/Sprinter Trueno is one of those cars you look at and remember that Toyota used to be the least beige of all the Japanese carmakers. While the Corolla now is the perfect car for those people who just want something to get them places without any fuss or stress or excitement at all, back in the early 70s, Toyota would sell you (in Japan, anyway) a Corolla with a 115 horsepower Yamaha-developed twincam engine and a 5-speed, in a body that weighed just under a ton. And yes, these are rear-drive.

This is a Sprinter Trueno, meaning it's the slightly sportier of the two, and it's a very clean example with period-correct fender flares (I've never seen one without them, so they may have even come stock) and a set of Tom's Igeta wheels, which are rare and expensive enough that about sixth of the car's asking price would go into the wheels, if purchased separately.

And about that price: these are desirable as hell and go for a hell of a lot more than the cars it competed with, namely the Nissan Bluebird/Datsun 5/610. Everybody loves the 510, with its IRS and everything, but the engines, even in the SSS models, were still a bit of a lump, especially compared to the screaming 2T-G you could get in the Toyota. This is actually one of the more affordable TE27s I've seen on Goo, and it's still priced at a slightly painful $15,690.

These are awesome as shit, though, and it's a great way to remind yourself that Toyota was, for a long time, the most exciting and sporting of the major Japanese carmakers, which in turn is a great way to make you feel sad about what they eventually became. At least you'd have a good understanding of why Akio Toyoda is so frustrated about the state of his family's company.

As a bonus, here's one hooning around in the snow, so you can hear how amazing that engine sounds:

Seriously, when Toyota and Yamaha get together, they always make something amazing.
